Gerard Macdonald Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the passing of Gerard Joseph Macdonald, affectionately known as Jerry, who peacefully departed from this world on Thursday, March 7th, 2024, at the age of 73. He passed with family at his side and in their hearts at Cayuga Medical Center due to heart and stroke complications.

Born in Boston, MA, on August 1st, 1950, to Ethel Elizabeth and Gerard Eugene Macdonald, Jerry grew up in Milton, MA, as the youngest of eleven siblings. He served his country with honor, enlisting in the Air Force and training as a radio communication technician. Despite expectations of overseas duty during the Vietnam era, he was stationed at a base near his hometown on Cape Cod, much to the chagrin of his fellow Airmen, who jokingly protested by throwing him into the showers.

Jerry's life was marked by diverse experiences and passions. After settling in Ithaca, NY, in the late 1970s, he devoted thirty-six years to CountyWide Appliance Service, where he became a revered master technician known for his patience in explaining solutions to customers. Customers would call for him by name, and even wait weeks until he was available. In retirement, he continued his passion for repairing all sorts of engines and electrical equipment.

A hardcore Harley Davidson biker, Jerry found joy in riding his bike even in cold weather until the snow would fall. As a 42-year member of the Tompkins County Chapter of Abate of New York, he helped organize numerous charity events. He most often rode with Chuck Westlake and they loved to ride around Cayuga Lake. He rode his bike right up until last fall at 73 years old. He was also an avid fan of classic rock music, with a particular fondness for Jerry Garcia and bands such as The Doors and The Beatles.

Jerry's love extended to his family, especially his grandchildren. As a talented artist, he would sketch for them detailed drawings ranging from motorcycles to lighthouses. His adventurous, fun spirit was well known and as an adult he was often the first person at a party to climb a tree, inviting the grandkids to follow him up or giving them a boost. He shared a deep connection with his second wife, Julia, enjoying 33 years of devoted companionship and giving each other their unwavering support. They enjoyed motorcycle rides, and cultural festivals, and became theatre members.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Julia, his two sons from his first marriage, Leo Macdonald of New Hope PA, and his wife Joan, and granddaughters Iona and Aurora, and son Orion Macdonald of Troy, NY. Stepson Andrew Bentley of Castleton, VT his wife Jamie, and granddaughters Ember and Mesa. Stepdaughter Karen Morrit (predeceased) and grandsons and daughters Saarya, Tal, Haya, Michael, Elana, Shoshan, and two great-granddaughters, Sophie and Zoe. He also leaves loving sisters and brothers-in-law in and beyond Boston as well as over twenty nieces and nephews and innumerable great-nieces and nephews.

Jerry was buried at Greensprings Natural Cemetery Preserve in Newfield, NY on March 10th, 2024. To honor his life and legacy, the family will hold calling hours at Bangs Funeral Home on Saturday, March 16th, from 10 AM to 12 noon. A Memorial Service will follow from 12 noon to 1 PM. Instead of flowers, contributions may be made to the Veterans of Foreign Wars and The Newfield Community Good Neighbor Fund.

Jerry's memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. Rest peacefully, Jerry, as you embark on your final ride from this Earth.
