Dr. Creston D. Munger of 602 Hudson Street, Ithaca, NY, died March 21, 2015.
He was born September 19, 1928 in Wolcott, NY to Josephine Joiner Munger and Lynn Munger. His childhood and teenage years were spent in Wolcott, NY where he helped his parents in their grocery store, participated in school athletics, and sang in the school chorus. He was graduated from Leavenworth Central School in Wolcott, NY in 1946. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a veteran of the Korean War.
Dr. Munger held a Bachelor's degree (1956) and a Master's degree (1958) from the State University College at SUNY Brockport, and a Ph.D. in English Education from Syracuse University (1983). He taught at Illinois State University at Normal, IL, at Cayuga Community College in Auburn, NY, where he was chair of the English Department for seventeen years, and at Green Mountain College in Poultney, VT. In his retirement, he moved to Union Springs, NY and became the proprietor of Our Town Antiques.
He is survived by his two daughters, Dr. Kristen Munger (Phoenix, NY) and Dr. Sharon Munger Wailes (Bloomington, IN), and his two grandsons, Philip Wailes and Patrick Wailes (Bloomington, IN). Burial arrangements are by Bangs Funeral Home in Ithaca, NY. Friends and family are invited to a memorial service at 3pm Sunday, April 12 at Trinity United Church of Christ in Union Springs, with a meal following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Trinity United Church of Christ, 163 Cayuga St. Union Springs, NY 13160.
