Van Hartman, a dedicated Navy veteran, public servant, beloved husband, father,
grandfather, great-grandfather, and craftsman, passed away peacefully on April 19, 2025,
surrounded by his children and nephew. He was 81.
Born on May 6, 1943, Van grew up in Wellsburg, New York, and graduated from Southside
High School in Elmira in 1960. Shortly after graduation, he enlisted in the United States
Navy, proudly serving his country before returning to civilian life and beginning a long and
meaningful career rooted in service to others.
After his time in the Navy, Van began working at Arnot Ogden Hospital in Elmira, where he
met the love of his life, Cheri Fitzgerald. They were married in 1966 and built a life
centered around love, commitment, and family. Cheri passed away in 2016, and Van
cherished their 50 years together. Together, they raised three children: Heidi, Shane, and
Scott.
In 1973, Van joined the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Department after working at
Woolworth’s in Ithaca. He served with distinction until his retirement in 1998. He began on
airport detail before moving to the Juvenile Division as a Criminal Investigator, a role he
often called the most rewarding of his career. He formed meaningful connections with
young people and was a steady, compassionate presence in the lives of many. In 1978, he
received the New York State Sheriffs' Association’s Top Award for Meritorious Service after
rescuing a teenager from the cliffs in Cayuga Heights.
Later in his career, Van served as an adult criminal investigator and was a key contributor
to the Safe Awareness Driving (SAD) program, which brought law enforcement, medical
responders, and community leaders together to educate teens on the dangers of impaired
driving.
Following his retirement from the Sheriff's Department, Van remained an active and
familiar face in the community, working on the Events Staff at Cornell University athletic
events for over a decade. He was known for his warm smile, sharp humor, and steady
presence.
Van treasured his time with his grandchildren—Kari, Jacob, Nicholas, and Eva—and could
often be found in his workshop, building beautiful furniture with care and craftsmanship.
Though he did not have the opportunity to meet his great-grandchildren, he took great
pride in knowing his family would continue to grow and carry on his legacy.
Van Hartman leaves behind a legacy of service, integrity, and love. He will be deeply missed
by his children Heidi, Shane (Jaimie Voorhees), and Scott, his grandchildren, great-
grandchildren, extended family, and the many friends and colleagues whose lives he
touched.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, May 13 at 12:00 p.m., at Woodlawn Cemetery
in Newfield, NY.
