Edward “Ed” Arthur Johnson, of Newfield, NY, passed away on June 4, 2025, after a short but courageous battle with amyloidosis. He was 59 years old. Born on February 2, 1966, Ed lived a life marked by hard work, deep love for his family, and a passion for the outdoors that few could match. From humble beginnings, Ed worked diligently, saved with determination, and eventually bought a home and over 100 acres of farmland. There, he built up a herd of more than 44 beef cattle and made the land his own. Ed retired as Director of Buildings and Grounds at West Village Apartments, where his dedication and work ethic left a lasting impression. Always resourceful, he also sold firewood and scrap metal on the side, preferring the satisfaction of self-reliance. He believed in paying cash, distrusted banks, and saw interest as something to be avoided at all costs. Hunting was Ed’s greatest passion. He didn’t just love it — he lived for it. If it was hunting season, everything else could wait until after the day’s hunt. When he wasn’t in the woods, he was getting ready to be. He also enjoyed a good game of euchre and had a fierce competitive streak when it came to Texas Hold’em. Being outdoors was simply a part of who he was. Ed was a big man — physically imposing and powerfully strong. Next to him, others often felt small in size, and even smaller in stamina, especially when splitting and throwing firewood. But beyond his strength, he had a deep love for his family and a quiet intensity that those close to him knew well. Ed is survived by his loving wife of 28 yrs., Patty Johnson; his daughter Andrea; his sons Jacob (Rhiannon) and Mathew; his mother, Janet Grasso; his father, Don Johnson, Sr.; his stepmother Renee Johnson; his brothers Don (Devra); Rayin; and Cadren. He was predeceased by his beloved son Josh and his twin brother Roy (Shari), with whom he shared an unbreakable bond.
A celebration of life will be held on June 14, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Peoples Baptist Church, 364 Main St., Newfield, NY 14867. All are welcome to attend and share in honoring Ed’s memory. The family thanks all for the outpouring of love. Special thanks to those that made it possible for Ed to make it back to Ithaca and the wonderful staff and doctors at ICU Cayuga Medical.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the GoFundMe: Ed Johnson. But perhaps the most meaningful tribute you could make: take a youth out hunting — Ed would have loved that.
