Edward Lynn Schulman
1942-2025
Beloved father, husband and friend Edward Lynn Schulman passed away on May 26, 2025 at the age of
83. He was born and raised in the Bronx, New York City. He grew up with a passion for trains and
planes. He also loved birds and other animals his whole life. His adoring cousin Bonnie remembers Ed
naming types of airplane engines that flew overhead when they were young. Ed worked at Yankee
Stadium as a kid, thrilled to watch baseball games. His prized possession was a 1954 baseball signed
by the team. His favorite hobby was building and collecting detailed model trains.
Ed attended DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bronx. He went on to attend Cornell University
College of Engineering, graduating with his B.S. in 1966. He was a member of the Beta Sigma Rho
fraternity where he met his best friend and future business partner Spencer Silverstein. He also met his
first wife at Cornell, and moved to Vestal, New York after graduating. There he earned his M.S. in
Computer Systems and PhD (ABD) at SUNY Binghamton, and had his only daughter, Jacqueline.
He later moved back to Ithaca and reconnected with Spencer and his wife Pam. Together, they founded
Ironics, Inc., one of the first entrepreneurial computer companies. He enjoyed international travel with
his friends, especially to Switzerland to ride the Glacier Express.
Ed later founded Perceptions, Inc., a company dedicated to the fine art of paper engineering. He
meticulously designed 3-D train kits, machines, and pop-up invitations, all out of paper. He sold one
paper train kit at Barnes and Noble.
Ed married his wife Renee in 2012. They enjoyed traveling together to destinations such as Greece and
Morocco. They lovingly welcomed Renee's nephew Geoffrey into their lives and raised him like a son.
Ed was known for his fun-loving sense of humor, gentle kindness, and fairness. Throughout his life, Ed
kept pet sun conures and parakeets, beginning with his childhood parakeet named Skippy. He loved
other animals, too, especially dogs. He was an acclaimed photographer and spent much of his life
observing the world through a camera's lens. He was an avid European model train collector and
enjoyed attending hobbyist shows. He delighted in going to Blue Angels air shows and often took his
daughter. He loved Jewish deli and chocolate-covered orange peel candy.
Ed is predeceased by his parents, Martha and Sidney Schulman. He is survived by his wife Renee,
daughter Jacqueline Dobranski, son-in-law Anthony Dobranski, adoring grandsons Rowan and Nolan,
his nephew Geoffrey, cousin Bonnie Carney, and many dear friends and extended family members.
Ed will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched. He was laid to rest on May 28 at Lake View
Cemetery in Ithaca, New York. A celebration of life will be held later this summer.
