Gerald “Jerry” M. Decker, a U.S. Navy veteran and long-time resident of Spencer, NY, passed away peacefully on May 20, 2025, at the age of 74. Jerry grew up in Oneonta with his parents, Firman H. Decker and June R. Decker, and his siblings, Kathy A. Jensen and Paula S. Holstein. He loved to play guitar, ski, wrestle, and coach others.
Jerry enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served with dedication, honor, and courage. He served on the USS Steinaker and USS Sierra. His time in the military was an important chapter of his life, and he took pride in serving his country. He valued honesty, accountability, and balance. Following his naval service, he went on to work as a local electrician. He was known for his discipline, strong work ethic, and independence. He engaged in many hobbies, including beekeeping, fishing, hunting, repairing instruments, playing pool and poker. He continued to participate in the New York State Veterans Oxford Honor Guard.
He is survived by his mother, June, his siblings, Kathy and Paula (Edward), his children, Nathaniel (Marcy), Michael (Jessica), and Amber, as well as his grandchildren, Alyssa, Brandon, Cameron, and Alexander, and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Kathryn A. Decker, his father, Firman H. Decker, his brother-in-law, Floyd W. Jensen, Jr., and his grandchild, Alexis A. Decker.
Please join the Decker family on Saturday, May 31st at People’s Baptist Church, 364 Main Street, Newfield, NY 14867. Viewing begins at noon. A service will be held at 1 pm followed by graveside military honors and meal to conclude. Those who are unable to attend and/or wish to honor Jerry’s memory may do so through a monetary, material, or time donation to the Veteran Affairs Syracuse Healthcare System in recognition of his military service.
