In Loving Memory of Guy Edward Smith

It is with the heaviest of hearts, yet with profound gratitude for a life beautifully lived, that we announce the passing of Guy Edward Smith, 75, on August 31, 2026. Guy was a man of genuine warmth, deep intellect, and boundless kindness who left an indelible mark on everyone he loved.

Born in Chicago Heights, Illinois, on April 19, 1951, to DeEtta and Edward Smith, Guy was the proud eldest of nine children. He graduated from Hammond High School in 1969 and began his academic journey at the University of Chicago. Though he paused his studies to dedicate himself to starting a family, Guy’s passion for learning never waned. He later returned to his education with distinction, attending Broome Community College, where his academic excellence earned him an induction into the Phi Theta Kappa honor society. He went on to graduate from Cornell University, transitioning seamlessly from a brilliant student to a valued employee in the preservation department at Olin Library.

Though Guy retired from Cornell in 1999, he never retired from life. He possessed a vibrant, gentle spirit and an enduring curiosity about the world around him. An avid lover of nature, he found immense joy in bird watching and gardening. His soul was fed by the arts, from the soaring notes of classical music and the energy of musical theater to the beauty of fine art.

Guy met his partner, Sam, on a dating site almost 15 years ago in Ithaca. They enjoyed visiting the Finger Lakes and friends in Horseheads and Vermont. He was also a master in the kitchen, sharing his superb culinary skills with those he loved. A gifted writer of haiku, he had a rare talent for finding the exact right words to express his affection. Anyone blessed to be loved by Guy will deeply miss his trademark holiday and birthday cards—he never forgot a single loved one, always wrapping them in his thoughtfulness. His infectious laugh, empathy, and wisdom will be achingly missed by all who knew him.

Guy’s legacy of love lives on through his devoted partner, Sam Brenner; and his six cherished children, Kimberlee (Smith) Anthony, Marcus Smith, Kellianne Smith, Rachelle Smith, Nathan Smith, and Gerry Smith.

He is the adored grandfather of Theo Anthony, Jarrett Anthony, Layla Anthony, and Marcellus Smith.

He is also survived by his eight siblings: his brothers, Joseph Smith, Gary Smith, Ivan Smith, and Marshall Smith; and his sisters, Joyce Smith, Marcella Smith Wilson, and Bonnie Smith. He is further survived by his nieces, Takisha and Megan; and his nephews, Victor Smith, Gary Smith Jr., and Quest Smith.

Guy was preceded in death by his parents, DeEtta and Edward Smith, and his beloved nephew, Antwon.

To celebrate Guy's beautiful journey, the family will hold a service on Saturday, September 19, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Greensprings Natural Cemetery Preserve in Newfield, NY.

In lieu of flowers, and in honor of Guy’s lifelong love for nature, the family kindly asks that donations be made to the Ithaca Bird Sanctuary in Guy Smith’s name.
