Justine M Kalka, beloved mother, sister, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully October 23, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of perseverance, intellect, and compassion.

Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Ms. Kalka was the daughter of Robert L. Kalka and Genevieve Kraszewski Kalka. She was one of nine children and is survived by her son David Kalka, her granddaughter, Mazie Cathleen, three brothers, three sisters, many nieces, nephews and friends.

Ms. Kalka graduated from St. Augustine’s High School before moving to New York City in 1960 at the age of eighteen—a bold step that marked the beginning of a life defined by curiosity and independence. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Pittsburgh and a Master’s degree in Library Science from Columbia University.

In 1977, Ms. Kalka joined the Peace Corps and was stationed on the isle of Montserrat where she served as a librarian. During her service she made lifelong friends and found deep fulfillment in sharing knowledge and fostering literacy within the community. After returning to New York, she built a distinguished career as a legal librarian at several prominent firms, including Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison; Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz; and DLA Piper.

Guided by a lifelong commitment to service, Ms. Kalka was a Big Sister in New York City, and a long-time volunteer at the Caroline Food Pantry in Upstate New York. She spent her final years in Ithaca surrounded by friends and family. Her warmth, intelligence, and generous spirit will be remembered by all.
