Lyman A. Proaper

September 24, 1916 — March 15, 2015

Lyman A. Proaper born on September 24, 1916 in Montour Falls, NY to Earl Proaper and Anna Fanton Proaper,died on March 15 after a brief illness.

Lyman grew up in Montour Falls and graduated from Cook Academy. He served in the Tenth Mountain Division during World War II. Trained as a ski trooper in Camp Hale, Colorado, Lyman participated in the drive to remove the Germans from the Po Valley in Italy.
He worked for over 20 years at Shepard Niles in Montour Falls and 18 years at Smith Corona as a tool and die maker.

Lyman had two wonderful wives who predeceased him: Janet Byrne Proaper, with whom he enjoyed over thirty years of marriage and Irene Rohel Proaper, with whom he enjoyed 20 years of happy married life. Lyman enjoyed golfing and working with his hands. He was always physically active and delighted in fixing things and working on home improvements. In his 80s, he became an accomplished wood carver. His family and friends will remember his refreshing directness and wonderful sense of humor. He had a sharp mind and was a delightful story teller.

Lyman is survived by his children - Mary Proaper Eichenlaub (Gary) of Amesbury, MA, Patricia Proaper DiGiannantonio of Ithaca, NY, Donald Rohel of Charles Town, WV and Karen Rohel of Sarasota, FL. Lyman has three devoted grandchildren Lisa DiGiannantonio (Kirk) of Yakima, WA, Kathy Eichenlaub Blinn (Scott) of Rensselear, NY and Nancy Eichenlaub (Jonas) of Halmstad, Sweden and 4 wonderful great grandchildren.

No funeral service will be held. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to Hospicare of Ithaca or Loaves and Fishes. Bangs Funeral Home is assisting the family.
