Neil A. Sherwood, 81, of Danby, NY, passed away on June 15, 2026 at home with family at his side after a long struggle with diabetes, chronic liver and kidney disease.
Born on March 27, 1945, in Ithaca, New York, he is the son of Virginia Marcoux and Edmund Leroy (Roy) Sherwood. He remained in the Ithaca area. After graduating Dryden High School in 1963 he enlisted in the US Navy and served at Pearl Harbor until honorably discharged from active duty in 1966.
Before retirement in 2008 Neil worked 30 years at Cornell University eventually serving as a technical services supervisor at the Laboratory for Elementary-Particle Physics at Cornell University (LEPP) at Newman Lab and supported research activities at Wilson Laboratory. He supervised operation of the chemical preparation facility and was responsible for supporting complex systems and components of various physics research programs, specializing in ultra-high vacuum systems and vacuum-brazing technology. He also served as department safety representative.
Neil is survived by his wife of 60 years, Josie Diane (Dingler) Sherwood; children Kim Sherwood-Caso and Dana Sherwood; grandchildren Seven Caso, Tenor Caso and Soren Sherwood; sisters, Janice Guidi Kromer and Joanne Guidi, of Pennsylvania, Linda Brown of New Jersey, brother Edmund Leroy Sherwood, Jr. of Fishkill, NY, and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Neil was predeceased by brothers Lynn Sherwood, Gary Sherwood, and sister, Janet Aguirre. Neil will be remembered among friends and family as a computer, electronics, and TV repair wiz, avid Yankees fan and great music enthusiast. He had a love of animals and nature and a unique sense of humor and quick wit about him that made everyone laugh.
A private graveside burial will be at The Danby (Curtis) Cemetery, in Danby, NY.
