Robert C. Spencer

Robert C. Spencer, fondly known to many as "Bob," passed away peacefully on July 24, 2026, in Elmira at the age of 68. Born on May 8, 1958, in Ithaca, Bob was a dedicated member of his community whose life and legacy will be cherished by all who knew him.

Bob’s enduring commitment to public service was demonstrated through a distinguished career in law enforcement. He served with honor and integrity at both the Tompkins County Sheriff's Department and the Groton Police Department, retiring from each after years of devoted work. Even in retirement, Bob continued to look out for his community by working part time as security at special events, exemplifying his steadfast care for the safety and wellbeing of others. Bob was very active in his community, volunteering with the Brooktondale Fire and Rescue, serving over 30 years as an EMT. An avid outdoorsman, Bob loved to hunt and fish and just enjoyed being in nature.

Family was the cornerstone of Bob’s life, and his devotion to his loved ones was second to none. He is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Lisa Lovejoy Spencer, his sons Bobby (Lita DePitta) Spencer and Chris (Shannon) Spencer, and their families. Bob’s legacy continues in his grandchildren—Tara, Morgan (Damon Ogden), Bobby Earl, Madisyn, Kailyn, and Brayden; great grandchildren,  RaeLynn Ogden, and Gavin Ogden—who brought him endless joy and pride. He is also survived by his sister Patricia (Richard) Eicheldinger, whose memories with Bob remain a treasured part of the family’s story.

Bob was preceded in death by his mother, Betty VanDekar Spencer, his father, Robert Spencer, and his sister, Linda Lynch. Their memories are cherished, and the love they shared with Bob endures in the hearts of those left behind.

Friends, family, and all whose lives were touched by Bob are invited to honor his memory at a Celebration of Life to be held on August 8, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Brooktondale Fire Department, located at 786 Valley Road, Brooktondale, NY 14817. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Brooktondale Fire and Rescue.
