David Corina Obituary

David Russell Corina, 91, was born in Bethlehem, PA on September 12, 1930 and died May 26, 2022 in Ithaca, NY. During his youth the Corina family lived for a time in Dover, NJ and then in Troy, NY. He graduated from Catholic Central High School in Troy where he met the love of his life, Marie Florence Winkelman, to whom he was married for 70 years.

David graduated from Union University Albany College of Pharmacy in 1952. While living in Ithaca, he worked for several pharmacies, including Brooks Pharmacy, Hill Drugs and CVS before assuming the role of Head of Pharmacy at Tompkins County Hospital (now Cayuga Medical Center). He retired in 1992. During the late 1960’s he chaired both the City and County Narcotics Guidance Councils. David was an active member of City Club for many years; and was a 4th degree Knight of Columbus. He was a great hunter and fisherman. He was featured on the front page of the Ithaca Journal for having caught the largest Brown Trout taken from Cayuga Lake; a record he held for many years. He also enjoyed writing stories about his fellow fishermen who, like him, enjoyed fishing from the shore. Several of his stories were published in the Ithaca Journal. David hunted from a deer stand, taking delight in observing nature from his perch in a tree. As an armchair naturalist, he taught his children about plants and insects. He loved hunting wild mushrooms, especially Morels. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church and a life member of Ithaca Yacht Club.

David is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Marie; and six of his eight children, Stephanie Goddard of Freeville, NY, Marc (Betty) Corina of Magnolia, TX, Jason (Cindy) Corina of Freeville, NY, David (Sharon) Corina of Davis, CA, Kristin (John) Dempsey of Ithaca, NY, and Rachel (Floyd) Ayers of Ithaca; he was pre-deceased by his sons, Aaron and Seth. He is also survived by eight  grandchildren, Kyle (fiance’ Mayu), Ian (Olivia), Jude and Eamon Dempsey, Reinemarie and Blaise Ayers, Jacob and Isabella Corina; great grandson, Oren Dempsey; brother, Aurelius (Isabella) Corina of Ithaca, NY and several nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by three brothers, Edmund, Neil and Stephen Corina.

The Corina family is grateful for the loving and dedicated staff at Brookdale Memory Care who cared for him for the last twelve months of his life; and to Ithaca Hospicare for giving him comfort in his final weeks.
