John Murphy Obituary


John J. Murphy, a long-time resident of Ithaca, New York, and the retired Tompkins County Administrator, died on Saturday, January 15 at the Syracuse Home at McHarrie Center in Baldwinsville, New York after a brief illness.
He was born on April 4, 1922, in Archbald, Pennsylvania, the son of John Thomas Murphy and Anna Mahon.  He married Molly Ruane on December 1, 1951, and they had five children.
During World War Two, he served as a Second Lieutenant and Navigator in U.S. Army Air Corp.
He earned an Accounting degree from St John’s University in New York City and was employed by Price Waterhouse as an auditor and accounting manager.
In 1957, he became the Controller and Chief Financial Officer for the National Cash Register company in Ithaca, New York.  From 1969 until his retirement in 1986, he was the County Administrator Tompkins County.
John was a Communicant of Immaculate Conception Church, where he served on the Finance Council and maintenance committees. He was a life-time member of the Fraternal Order of Elks, former Treasurer of the McGraw House Board of Directors and active in several community charities.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Molly Ruane Murphy, his sons, Robbie Murphy and Terry Murphy, and many beloved cousins and extended family members.  He is survived by his daughter, Marianne Murphy Sullivan (Michael), and sons Kevin Murphy (Ida) and Reverend Timothy Murphy, three grandchildren: John Murphy, Molly Sullivan and Brendan Sullivan.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 am in Immaculate Conception Church. The family will receive friends from 9:30 - 10:30am before the mass.
